Why stay here
Surry Hills sits just south-east of the CBD and has quietly become the neighbourhood locals point to when asked where they'd actually want to live. Former warehouses and terrace houses have been converted into some of the city's best independent cafés, restaurants, and small bars, packed into a walkable grid a fraction of the size of the CBD itself.
It won't put you on the harbour, but it will put you within a 15–20 minute walk of Central Station, the CBD, and Oxford Street — close enough to everything without the tourist-strip pricing of Circular Quay.
Getting oriented
Crown Street is the main spine, running the length of the suburb, with Devonshire Street and Bourke Street as secondary strips worth wandering. The suburb is small enough to cover on foot in any direction within 20 minutes.

Reuben Hills and Single O are two of the more famous café names here, but Surry Hills' real strength is its depth — walk two blocks past the well-known spots and you'll still find a genuinely good coffee, no queue required.
What to do while you're here
- Wander Crown Street end to end, treating it as a grazing trip rather than a single destination — this is one of the best-stocked food streets in the city.
- Browse Brickfield laneway and the smaller side streets for independent fashion and design stores you won't find in the CBD chains.
- Catch a small bar crawl — Surry Hills has one of the highest concentrations of intimate, no-sign-out-front bars in Sydney, several hidden behind unmarked doors.
- Visit on a Saturday morning when the suburb feels most like itself: locals doing the week's shopping, cafés at their busiest, and a genuine neighbourhood buzz rather than a tourist one.
Where it gets crowded
Crown Street's most famous cafés get a genuine breakfast queue on weekend mornings — if you're not fussed about a specific spot, walking a block or two off the main strip usually gets you seated immediately with barely a drop in quality.
Getting here
Central Station sits at the suburb's western edge, an easy walk into the heart of Surry Hills, with light rail also running along Devonshire Street.
