Why stay here
Paddington is Sydney at its most postcard-pretty in a different way to the harbour — row after row of ornate Victorian terrace houses with iron lacework balconies, on steep, leafy streets between the city and the eastern beaches. It's a genuinely upmarket neighbourhood, home to boutique fashion stores, small commercial art galleries, and some of the city's best-preserved 19th-century architecture.
It suits visitors who want a quieter, residential base with real character, and don't mind being a bus ride rather than a walk from the CBD.
Getting oriented
Oxford Street forms the main commercial spine along the suburb's northern edge, with the residential terrace streets running steeply downhill to the south. The suburb rewards wandering without a fixed plan more than most.
🛍️ Local tip
The famous Paddington Markets run every Saturday in the grounds of Paddington Uniting Church on Oxford Street — arrive by 10am if you want to browse without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, and bring cash for the smaller stalls.
What to do while you're here
- Wander the terrace-lined side streets south of Oxford Street — Elizabeth Street and Glenmore Road in particular are among the prettiest in the city, no destination required.
- Browse the commercial art galleries, several free to enter, concentrated along Jersey Road and the surrounding blocks — a genuine window into Sydney's contemporary art scene beyond the major public galleries.
- Visit the Saturday market for local designers, vintage finds, and a genuinely good food stall selection.
- Walk on to Centennial Park, a large, genuinely lovely green space at Paddington's southern edge, popular with local runners and cyclists.
Where it gets crowded
Saturdays, entirely because of the market — expect Oxford Street busy from mid-morning. Weekdays and Sundays are noticeably quieter and better for simply enjoying the architecture.
Getting here
No train station serves Paddington directly — regular buses run along Oxford Street from the CBD, taking about 15–20 minutes, or it's a scenic (if uphill) 30-minute walk from the city centre.
