Why stay here
Glebe sits between the CBD and the University of Sydney, and its student-adjacent population keeps things noticeably more affordable than comparable inner-city suburbs — a genuine advantage for visitors on a tighter budget who still want to be close to the centre. It's leafy, a little scruffy in the best way, and known locally for secondhand bookshops, a well-regarded Saturday market, and a relaxed, unpretentious café scene.
It won't give you harbour views or postcard architecture, but it's an easy, practical base with real neighbourhood character and some of the better value-for-location accommodation near the city centre.
Getting oriented
Glebe Point Road is the main strip, running from near Broadway down toward the water at Blackwattle Bay, lined with bookshops, cafés, and restaurants reflecting the area's large international student population.
📚 Local tip
Gleebooks and Sappho Books are two of the best-known secondhand and independent bookshops in the city — genuinely worth a browse even if you're not planning to buy, and a good wet-weather backup activity.
What to do while you're here
- Browse the Saturday market at Glebe Public School, smaller and more relaxed than Paddington's, with a strong mix of vintage clothing, local design, and street food.
- Walk to Jubilee and Bicentennial Parks, a genuinely pleasant harbourside green space with views across Blackwattle Bay toward the (redeveloping) Fish Market site.
- Explore Glebe Point Road's bookshops and cafés at an unhurried pace — this is a neighbourhood built for wandering, not a checklist.
- Visit the University of Sydney's main quadrangle, a short walk away, if you appreciate sandstone Gothic Revival architecture — free to explore and genuinely striking.
Where it gets crowded
Saturdays, for the market — otherwise this is a consistently relaxed, rarely crowded neighbourhood even by Sydney's more modest standards.
Getting here
No train station serves Glebe directly, but it's a comfortable 20–25 minute walk from Central Station, or a short light rail or bus ride from the CBD.
