Why Sydney's Vietnamese food is genuinely excellent
Decades of Vietnamese migration, concentrated particularly in the suburbs of Cabramatta and Marrickville, mean Sydney has some of the best, most authentic Vietnamese food outside Vietnam itself — and it's mostly found well outside the CBD, in suburbs most first-time visitors never reach.
Cabramatta: the destination trip
Cabramatta, about 40 minutes from the CBD by train, is worth a dedicated half-day trip for anyone serious about the food. The area around the station is dense with Vietnamese bakeries, pho restaurants, and produce markets, and prices run noticeably lower than anything comparable in the inner city.
🍜 What to order
Pho is the obvious start, but don't stop there — bánh mì from a proper Vietnamese bakery (not a CBD imitation), bánh xèo (crispy turmeric pancakes), and fresh sugarcane juice are all worth seeking out specifically in Cabramatta.
Marrickville: the inner-city option
If Cabramatta is too far for your schedule, Marrickville — a 15-minute train ride from Central — has a strong Vietnamese food scene of its own, with the added convenience of being close to the rest of the Inner West's food and bar scene for an easy combined evening.
A few ordering tips
- Don't assume the busiest-looking restaurant is automatically the best — some of the most reliable spots are small, family-run, and easy to walk past.
- Most menus run large — a good pho or bánh mì spot doesn't need to also do everything else well, so simpler, focused menus are often a good sign.
- Cash is still preferred at some of the smaller, more traditional spots, particularly in Cabramatta — worth carrying some as backup.
Getting there
Both suburbs sit directly on Sydney Trains lines from Central Station — Cabramatta on the T2 line, Marrickville on the T3 — making either an easy no-car day trip from the city centre.
