Why this trip is different from the others
Wollongong and the Illawarra coast, around 90 minutes south of Sydney, offer something none of our other day trips quite match: a genuinely dramatic stretch of coastline where the escarpment drops almost straight to the sea, best experienced along the Grand Pacific Drive and its centrepiece, the Sea Cliff Bridge — a curved bridge built out over the ocean itself, with no land beneath sections of the roadway.
🚗 How to actually see it
The Sea Cliff Bridge and the wider Grand Pacific Drive are built for driving, with lookout points along the way — a car (self-driven or a tour) is genuinely the best way to do this trip, more so than most others on this site, since the drive itself is a core part of the experience, not just transport.
What to actually stop for
- The Sea Cliff Bridge itself, with a dedicated pedestrian and cycle path allowing you to walk out over the ocean separately from the road traffic — a genuinely unique short walk.
- Wollongong's city beaches, including the popular Wollongong City Beach, with a laid-back, less crowded feel than equivalent Sydney beaches.
- Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, offering a striking, unexpected architectural stop and a genuinely peaceful contrast to the coastal drive.
- Bald Hill Lookout at Stanwell Park, popular with hang gliders and paragliders, and a dramatic vantage point over the whole coastline you've just driven.
Is it worth choosing over other day trips?
If a scenic coastal drive is specifically what you're after — as opposed to mountains, wine country, or wildlife — this is the strongest option covered on this site. It's less suited to visitors without access to a car, given the more limited public transport coverage of the coastal drive itself (the train does reach Wollongong directly, but misses the Sea Cliff Bridge experience).
Getting there
Trains run directly from Central Station to Wollongong in around 90 minutes for those without a car, though reaching the Sea Cliff Bridge and Grand Pacific Drive properly requires a car or organised tour from there.
