Two buildings, both worth knowing about
The Art Gallery of NSW now spans two connected buildings: the original heritage-listed gallery, and Naala Badu, a striking newer building that opened in the early 2020s, built partly into the hillside with harbour glimpses from several levels. General admission to the permanent collection in both buildings is free — a significant drawcard for a gallery of this quality.
What's worth prioritising
- The Yiribana Gallery, dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, is one of the most significant collections of its kind anywhere and shouldn't be skipped even on a short visit.
- Naala Badu's lower levels, built into the old oil tanks that once occupied the site, house large-scale contemporary and site-specific installations that photos genuinely don't do justice to.
- The Grand Courts in the original building hold the more traditional European and Australian collections, worth a walk-through even if contemporary art isn't your main interest.
🎨 Local tip
Major touring exhibitions carry a separate ticket price and can sell out on weekends — book ahead online if there's a specific show you want to see, rather than assuming you can walk up.
How much time to budget
An hour is enough for a highlights-only visit across both buildings; two to three hours lets you properly cover the permanent collections without rushing. If a major touring exhibition is on, add another hour for that alone.
Getting there
The gallery sits at the edge of the Royal Botanic Garden, an easy extension to a garden or Opera House walk, and about a 10-minute walk from Martin Place station.
