Convenience stores and "servos" (petrol station shops — see our slang guide) commonly run 24 hours in busier areas, a reliable backup outside standard shopping hours.

Look for a pharmacy explicitly advertising late-night or 24-hour trading if you need medication outside standard hours — these exist in most well-populated areas but aren't universal, so it's worth identifying one near your accommodation early in your trip rather than searching during an actual emergency.
Restaurants and cafés
Cafés (see our brunch guide) typically open early and close mid-afternoon unless specifically operating as all-day dining venues; restaurants generally don't open for dinner service before 6pm, and kitchens in many suburban areas stop taking orders earlier than CBD or nightlife-focused areas like Kings Cross.
Public holidays and Sundays
