Why this is the easiest day trip on the list
Royal National Park — established in 1879 and generally recognised as the world's second-oldest national park — sits just south of Sydney, reachable directly by train from Central Station in under an hour. No car, no tour booking, no early start required, which makes it the most straightforward escape into genuine wilderness anywhere near the city.
The walk everyone's after: the Figure 8 Pools
The Figure Eight Pools, naturally eroded rock pools on the park's southern coastline, became a genuine social media phenomenon and now draw crowds accordingly. They're only safely visible at low tide, the walk in is longer and rougher than photos suggest, and conditions can turn dangerous quickly with incoming swell — check tide times and swell forecasts carefully before attempting it, and turn back if conditions look at all rough. It is not a walk to do casually or in poor conditions.

People have been seriously injured and killed at the Figure Eight Pools when waves swept them off the rock platform. Only attempt this walk at a confirmed low tide with calm seas, wear proper footwear, and turn back at any sign of larger swell.
Easier, equally rewarding options
If the Figure Eight Pools sound like more risk than you want, the park has plenty else worth the trip:
- Wattamolla Beach, a sheltered lagoon-and-ocean-beach combination reached via an easy walk from the car park — one of the most photogenic, family-friendly spots in the park.
- The Coast Track, a multi-day thru-hike for the serious, but its northern sections near Bundeena make for an excellent shorter day walk with dramatic clifftop views.
- Bundeena, reached by ferry from Cronulla, is a genuinely pretty village that doubles as a walking trailhead and a pleasant destination in its own right.
Getting there
Trains run from Central Station to Cronulla or to stations bordering the park (like Otford or Waterfall) depending on which section you're visiting — check the specific walk you're planning before choosing a station, as the park is large and not all entrances connect easily to each other on foot.
